Privacy and Reporting on Children and Vulnerable People
Our principles
- Protect dignity, privacy and safety above public curiosity.
- Do not publish identifying details of children in any sensitive case.
- Avoid revealing medical, financial or other sensitive personal data unless essential to the public interest and legally permitted.
- Obtain parental or guardian consent when children appear in celebratory or non-sensitive public coverage.
- Obscure faces and withhold identifying details where publication could cause harm.
How we decide
Editors weigh public interest against likely harm. Sensitive cases are escalated to senior editors, and to legal advisers where required.
